How to Choose Curtain Fabric for Light Control

When choosing curtain fabric, colour and pattern are only part of the picture. How much light the fabric lets through matters too. From sheers to blackout fabrics, different levels of light transmission create different balances between daylight, views and privacy.

Sheers and light-filtering fabrics

Sheer fabrics preserve and soften daylight and can support daytime privacy. Light-filtering fabrics filter light more effectively without completely sacrificing views outside or a bright, airy feel.

Dim-out and denser fabrics

Dim-out fabrics significantly reduce daylight but do not provide complete darkness in every installation. They can be considered for spaces that need softer light, greater privacy or less glare on screens.

Blackout and stronger light exclusion

Blackout fabrics are an option for spaces that require strong light control. The actual darkening effect depends on more than the fabric: measurements, installation method, the system, edge gaps and window geometry also affect light leakage.
