How to Choose Outdoor Upholstery Fabric
Choose outdoor upholstery fabric by considering sunlight, moisture, rainfall, drying conditions and performance information that the manufacturer has verified for outdoor use. An indoor fabric should never be specified outside on appearance alone.
Suitability for outdoor use must be verified
Do not use an interior upholstery fabric outside merely because it looks substantial. Check the manufacturer’s declaration for outdoor use together with verified data on UV exposure, colour fastness, water and stain behaviour, and susceptibility to mildew, then relate it to the site’s sun and rain exposure.
Water-resistant and waterproof are not the same
A water-repellent finish may delay droplets soaking into the surface, but seams, zips and prolonged rain can still admit water. Fully waterproof coatings may alter breathability and seating comfort. Establish whether the furniture is on a covered terrace or in a fully exposed position.
The filling and drying arrangement matter as much as the cover
A filling or closed base that traps water extends drying time and may increase the risk of mildew developing on dirt. Suitable quick-drying filling, drainage, ventilation and the ability to protect cushions during heavy rain form part of the complete specification.

Match expectations to the location
- Covered terraceLess direct rain and sun, although outdoor-use and care information still need verification.
- Fully exposed areaGreater UV, rain, dirt and drying demands; specify fabric, filling and construction together.
