Ten Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Curtains

Choosing curtains only by colour and price can overlook measurement, light control and everyday use. Review the complete window treatment before ordering.

1. Measuring only the glass

Record the track position, finished floor and ceiling levels, opening windows and nearby furniture or radiators. The space needed for curtains to stack beside the glazing is part of the measurement.

2. Comparing only the lowest price

Compare quotations with the same fabric code, quantities, fullness, lining, tracks, motors, making and installation scope. A headline price does not describe the complete treatment.

3. Choosing sheers and curtains separately

View both fabrics together with the walls, flooring and furniture under the same light. A tonal or contrasting scheme should suit the whole room.

4. Ignoring the difference between day and night

Review sun direction, hours of use and privacy. A fabric that preserves an outward view in daylight may not provide the same privacy when the room is lit after dark.

5. Leaving motorisation until the end

For wide or high openings, plan reach, total load, power, controls and service access early. Select motor capacity from the chosen system’s verified data.

6. Treating tracks and accessories as secondary

Track capacity, supporting surfaces and carriers affect movement. Include a suitable track and secure installation in the specification.

7. Overlooking fullness and stack-back

Fullness changes both fabric quantity and the space occupied when open. Assess the sample’s drape at the intended window width and fabric weight.

8. Asking about care after buying

Confirm washing, dry-cleaning and shrinkage guidance before selection. Fibre names alone do not establish care requirements; linings and coatings also matter.

9. Approving from photographs alone

Screens and small swatches cannot show the complete colour, texture or full-height drape. Compare physical samples in daylight and artificial light.

10. Leaving production and delivery details unclear

Confirm product and colour codes, finished dimensions, draw direction, installation scope and delivery arrangements in writing. Check movement, finished length and care information at handover.
