Wired or Rechargeable Motorized Curtains?

Wired and rechargeable motorized curtains do the same basic job: they move the curtain using a motor. The main difference is how the motor is powered and connected to the project’s electrical infrastructure. The right choice depends on window dimensions, frequency of use, curtain weight and the existing electrical supply.

Wired motorized curtains

A wired motor runs on a permanent electrical connection. In a new build or a project with planned electrical infrastructure, this can make it easier to conceal cables and control points, while avoiding periodic recharging in frequently used systems. Do not assume a wired motor is always more powerful: capacity must be verified for the product model, curtain type, dimensions and weight.

Rechargeable or battery-powered curtains

Rechargeable motors offer options that run on internal or external batteries without a permanent power cable. In existing buildings, they may allow installation without new wiring and with less disruption to the décor. Rechargeable battery solutions such as Somfy WireFree may be available for certain product groups; compatibility, charging method and performance must be checked for the specific brand and model.

Which is the right choice?

A wired system may suit a new build with electrical provision already in place, while a rechargeable system may be worth considering in an existing home or renovation where new wiring is unwanted. For large, heavy or specialist systems, review motor capacity and manufacturer specifications. For frequent use, consider the power supply, charging access and maintenance together. There is no single power option that is right for every project.
