What Do Zip Screens and Exterior Solar Shading Offer?
Zip and exterior screen systems are textile-based shading solutions fitted outside the facade to manage sunlight before it reaches the glass. The right choice considers facade orientation, opening dimensions, verified screen-fabric data, the motor and actual outdoor conditions together.

Solar control outside the facade
Exterior shading intercepts direct sunlight outside the glazing, working at a different point from an interior blind. Its visual and thermal effects depend on facade orientation, glazing properties, screen-fabric openness and colour, installation details and the time of use. Energy-saving percentages or precise indoor-temperature outcomes should not be stated without product-specific technical data.
How does a zip screen work?
In a zip system, both edges of the fabric travel within side guides, helping to keep the surface controlled and taut. This differs from a conventional vertical screen with free edges. A zip screen should not be described as an insect screen: each model’s insect, wind and size performance must be verified against its own technical documentation.
Dimensions, motors and project conditions
Plan the cassette and guide positions, finished opening dimensions, fixing substrate, drainage, wiring or power supply and maintenance access at the outset. Motorised operation can bring convenience and automation to large windows. Sun and wind sensors should be used only when compatible with the selected motor and control system; they do not replace user supervision or the model’s weather limits.
Compact comparison
Interior blinds and exterior screens serve different roles
- Interior curtains and blindsManage light, privacy and decoration inside the room, behind the glazing.
- Exterior zip screensIntercept sunlight outside the facade and are specified alongside the cassette, guides, fabric, motor and weather conditions.
Quick selection guide
Plan exterior shading in four steps

- Measure the openingResolve the cassette, guides, fixings and maintenance access against project measurements.
- Verify the fabricCheck screen openness, colour and performance data in the selected product sheet.
- Plan the controlsConfirm motor, wiring, control and sensor compatibility before installation.
