When Should Power for Motorised Curtains Be Planned?

Power for motorised curtains should be planned while the track or headbox position and the control strategy are being agreed—ideally during the building-services design or refurbishment stage. In an existing property, the practical options depend on the chosen system and site conditions.

When should it be planned?

For a wired motor, agree the track, headbox or curtain-pocket position while the architectural and electrical layouts are being prepared. Planning power and control cabling during construction or refurbishment reduces the risk of visible cables, disruptive alterations and inaccessible connections later.

Power and control are separate decisions

A motor may use mains power, low voltage, a plug-in adaptor or a battery. A wall switch, remote handset, group control, sensor or smart-home connection is a separate compatibility decision. Confirm the motor, power source and control protocol together for the selected manufacturer’s system.

Allow for the curtain pocket and maintenance access

In a suspended ceiling or curtain pocket, the motor end, track support, cable outlet and connection point must remain accessible. For large glazing, agree group controls, sensors and central automation before installation. In retrofit work, check the size and load limits of rechargeable or plug-in alternatives.
