How to Plan Smart-Home Curtain Integration

Integrating motorized curtains into a smart home takes more than choosing a motor. The control protocol, hub, app, sensors, electrical infrastructure and existing automation system need to be planned together.

Motor and system compatibility

Not every motorized curtain is automatically compatible with every smart-home system. Compatibility must be verified against the motor brand and model, communication protocol, hub or gateway, curtain system and existing building automation.

In a new build or renovation, plan the electrical supply, motor type, wired or rechargeable power, control points, hub location, network access, space for the track or mechanism, and service access as early as possible.

Hub, app and central control

A compatible hub or central controller can allow motorized curtains to be managed through an app and alongside other smart devices. Depending on the system, individual, group, room-based or remote control may be possible. Available functions depend on the motor, hub and software version.

Scenes, schedules and sensors

With suitable infrastructure, you can create morning-opening, evening-closing, cinema-mode, sun- or temperature-sensor, leaving-home and group-control scenes. Not every hub supports all advanced automations.

Some motor and hub solutions can integrate with Samsung SmartThings, voice assistants or other building and home automation systems in suitable configurations. Platforms such as Somfy TaHoma should be assessed only in the context of compatible products. Each combination’s compatibility must be checked for the specific products and software versions.
